Mary-Ellen Diorio, M.D.
Dr. Diorio, a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, joined ABCD, Inc. in 1998. She shares selected cases with her colleagues at ABCD and also collaborates with outside therapists and physicians. A psychiatrist is a licensed physician specifically trained to recognize and treat emotional disorders. Psychiatry training begins with 4 years of medical school, followed by 3-4 years of internship and general psychiatry residency. Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists spend an additional 2 years completing a fellowship where they receive supervised training in caring for children, adolescents and their families. Throughout these 9-10 years of training, psychiatrists are taught to assess each individual's problem within the context of their environment, to prescribe medications when appropriate and to provide many different types of psychotherapy.
Psychiatric assessments generally involve interviews with the child or teen and separate interviews with the parents. Discussion with teachers and other caregivers is common. As a member of your healthcare team, Dr. Diorio will confer with your other physicians.
Dr. Diorio has been trained to utilize many forms of therapy, including play therapy, psychodynamic psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral psychotherapy, interpersonal psychotherapy, family therapy and group therapy. As a licensed physician, Dr. Diorio may recommend medication to help alleviate the pain and suffering of emotional illness. Dr. Diorio is board certified in both General Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
